About Gate

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a National Level Examination that is jointly conducted by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and the other seven Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) at Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.

GATE is a computer-based standardized examination which is conducted at National Level in India that examines the basic understanding of subjects related to engineering and science. GATE exams are given by those students who seek to get an admission to the post graduate programmes, like Master's and Doctoral with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and other Government Scholarships / Assistantships that are subject to the admission criteria’s of the institutes. Further, some of the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like ONGC, NTPC, GAIL, HPCL, BHEL, BSNL, NHPC, BARC etc. also consider GATE Scores for their recruitment process.

There are 660 Designated Centres available where students can appear for GATE Examination in India. However, for the last few years GATE Exam has been opened for International Students as well like, Bangladesh, Shri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

What’s new in GATE Exam 2022?

  • Eligibility criteria to appear for GATE-2022 has been relaxed from the minimum 10+2+4 (ongoing) to minimum 10+2+3 (ongoing), enabling the third year students of undergraduate studies to appear for gate 2022 examination.
  • All Test Papers of GATE 2022 will be entirely objective type. Pattern of questions may include: (i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), (ii) Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and/or (iii) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • Two new subjects – Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Science (XH) has been added. The total number of subjects in GATE 2022 is now increased to 27.
  • Students applying for GATE 2022 can also opt for two subject papers from the prescribed set of combinations.

GATE Eligibility Criteria

Before Starting the application for GATE, it is necessary to check whether candidate meets the eligibility criteria or not. Every Year few modifications in eligibility criteria take place. So, the question arises – What new changes have been made in GATE Eligibility?

  • As per the new criteria, the minimum qualification required for candidates is 10+2+3.
  • Previous candidates could apply for only 1 subject/paper. However, this year onwards candidates can opt for 2 subjects/papers from the prescribed form of combinations.
  • There is no minimum or maximum age limit for appearingin the GATE Exam.
  • Foreign students from Nepal, Bangladesh, Shri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with Indian Students can also appear for GATE Entrance Exam.
  • Candidates passed/ appearing Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Arts/ Commerce or Post Graduation in relevant discipline are now also considered as eligible applicants.
  • There is no minimum percentage required to appear for the Exam. Similarly, there is no prescribed attempt limit, candidates who matches all the eligibility criteria can apply for the same.

GATE Eligibility Criteria for International Students

International Candidates who are appearing for GATE 2022, should match following criteria:
  • Must have completed or in the final year or in the pre-final year of their bachelor’s degree in engineering and technology.
  • Must have completed or in the final year or in the pre-final year of their Post Graduate degree in any relevant science subject.
  • Required Documents:
    1. If a candidate has already passed (in 2020 or earlier) one of the qualifying examinations mentioned above, they have to submit the degree certificate/provisional certificate/course completion certificate issued by the institute.
    2. If the candidate is in the final year of any of the qualifying examinations mentioned above, then they have to upload a Certificate from the Head of the Department/Institute.

GATE Exam Syllabus

How can a student prepare for GATE Exam? In order to start preparing for the exam, syllabus is very crucial and/or required thing to have, as it will help in deciding what topics to cover and what to not. All the candidates must go through the syllabus well to have a basic understanding of it. This will help in preparation and also to get a good score.

GATE Syllabus varies on the basis of the subjects chosen by candidates, however, General Aptitude is the section which remains common for all the papers. This section of General Aptitude comprises 15% marks, whereas 85% marks would be comprised by the core subjects.

General Aptitude Section The GATE paper will also consist of a compulsory General Aptitude (GA) section constituting of 10 questions.
• 5 Questions will carry 1 mark.
• 5 questions will carry 2 marks each.
Therefore, the total marks for this section will be 15 marks.
Marking Scheme MCQs carrying 1 mark each– 1/3 mark will be cut for every wrong answer.
MCQs carrying 2 marks – 2/3 mark will be cut for every incorrect response.
* There is no negative marking for Multiple Select Question (MSQ) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.

Application Form for GATE 2022 has started from 14th September, 2020. Candidates who wish to take admission in IITs/IISc or other institute can register themselves by filling GATE 2022 Application Form.

Gate 2022 Admission Process

GATE admission process starts from filling the application form to participate in counselling process. In between this, candidates are required to fulfil other criteria. Candidates should have idea about Gate Admission process which is as follow:

  1. Filling GATE 2022 Application Form: First step is to fill Application form for GATE 2022. Those who are appearing for GATE Exam, first required to register themselves for exam. Candidates can fill the application form from the official website.
  2. wnload GATE 2022 Admit Card: After registration, candidates are required to download their Admit Card. However, Admit Card release date is yet to be announced.
  3. Appear for GATE Exam 2022: As per the subject chosen, candidates have to appear in the exam. GATE 2022 schedule for the exam will be released along with the brochure for the exam.
  4. GATE 2022 result declaration: IIT Bombay will announce the GATE 2022 result in the month of March. The result will comprise candidates' marks, normalised score and rank.
  5. Participate in GATE 2022 counselling process: The counselling will be conducted for the candidates to choose the college and branch of their choice.

GATE Scores

GATE Results announced in 3rd week of March, on the official websites of GOPAS. Candidates who appeared for the exam can check the result online on this website. The candidates who have qualified in the GATE Exam, have an access of downloading score-card. This score-card is valid for only three years from the date of result declaration.

GATE Financial Assistance (Scholarship) & Fellowship in M. Tech/PhD

The Financial Assistance ship is provided through the institutions supported by the MHRD and other Government Agencies. As, GATE Exam is necessary to get Financial Assistance for masters and doctorate programme, candidates with good GATE Score in GATE Exam can get benefits of this Financial Assistance/ Fellowship.

Candidates must check first eligibility criteria and then apply for it, to get a Financial Assistance. This is how they can secure their seats (admission) for master studies in the institutes. For M.Tech studentsthis GATE Financial Assistance is provided for 2 years on the semester basis, whereas for PhD students maximum 5 years of assistance is provided. An amount of ₹12,400/month is provided to M.Tech Students, whereas, stipend of ₹25,000/month for upto 2 years is provided to PhD students. However, additional assistantships in the form of scholarship may be available through other organization, like CSIR, DAE, etc.

    A candidate can apply for only two (2) out of the 27 papers listed in the GATE Information Brochure or GATE website. A candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her qualifying degree. However, a candidate is free to choose any other paper according to his/her admission plan.

    In order to register for GATE Exam, candidates are required to fill the GATE Online Form through the official website of GATE Online Application Processing System (GOPAS), upload the required documents, and pay GATE Exam Fees. After a successful payment of application fees, your registration for GATE Exam will be confirmed.

    You can pay GATE application fees only through the Online Mode after filling GATE Application form on GOPAS.

    You can check the status of your GATE Application after submitting it successfully through the official website of GOPAS.

    You have to carry printed copy of GATE Admit Card along with a valid original (Not Photocopy) identity proof such as Driving License, Aadhar Card, Voter ID Card etc.

    No, Candidates will not be allowed take such items inside the examination hall. You will be provided with an on screen calculator on computer screen during GATE Exam.

    No, anyone can apply and appear for GATE Exam irrespective of his/her age.

    Yes, candidates will be allowed to make changes in their application form with extra charges within a scheduled time period by paying additional amount.

    There will be total 65 Questions of Maximum 100 Marks. Out of those 65 questions, 10 questions will be of General Aptitude and rest 55 questions will be of Engineering Mathematics and other Core Subject.

    There are three types of Questions: 1) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

    In GATE Exam, there will be 1/3rd of negative marking for 1 Marker MCQs and 2/3rd of negative marking for 2 Marks MCQs. There will be no negative marking for MSQs and NAT question types.
