The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a National Level Examination that is jointly conducted by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and the other seven Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) at Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.
GATE is a computer-based standardized examination which is conducted at National Level in India that examines the basic understanding of subjects related to engineering and science. GATE exams are given by those students who seek to get an admission to the post graduate programmes, like Master's and Doctoral with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and other Government Scholarships / Assistantships that are subject to the admission criteria’s of the institutes. Further, some of the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like ONGC, NTPC, GAIL, HPCL, BHEL, BSNL, NHPC, BARC etc. also consider GATE Scores for their recruitment process.
There are 660 Designated Centres available where students can appear for GATE Examination in India. However, for the last few years GATE Exam has been opened for International Students as well like, Bangladesh, Shri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Choosing a course is very simple but for getting into it, one should pass entrance exam. Entrance Examination is a mode for getting admission into various undergraduate, post graduate and profession degree courses. On the basis of entrance examination, suitable candidates are selected.

How can a student prepare for GATE Exam? In order to start preparing for the exam, syllabus is very crucial and/or required thing to have, as it will help in deciding what topics to cover and what to not. All the candidates must go through the syllabus well to have a basic understanding of it. This will help in preparation and also to get a good score.
GATE Syllabus varies on the basis of the subjects chosen by candidates, however, General Aptitude is the section which remains common for all the papers. This section of General Aptitude comprises 15% marks, whereas 85% marks would be comprised by the core subjects.

GATE Results announced in 3rd week of March, on the official websites of GOPAS. Candidates who appeared for the exam can check the result online on this website. The Financial Assistance ship is provided through the institutions supported by the MHRD and other Government Agencies. As, GATE Exam is necessary to get Financial Assistance for masters and doctorate programme, candidates with good GATE Score in GATE Exam can get benefits of this Financial Assistance/ Fellowship.
Candidates must check first eligibility criteria and then apply for it, to get a Financial Assistance. This is how they can secure their seats (admission) for master studies in the institutes. For M.Tech studentsthis GATE Financial Assistance is provided for 2 years on the semester basis, whereas for PhD students maximum 5 years of assistance is provided. An amount of ₹12,400/month is provided to M.Tech Students, whereas, stipend of ₹25,000/month for upto 2 years is provided to PhD students. However, additional assistantships in the form of scholarship may be available through other organization, like CSIR, DAE, etc.

A candidate can apply for only two (2) out of the 27 papers listed in the GATE Information Brochure or GATE website. A candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her qualifying degree. However, a candidate is free to choose any other paper according to his/her admission plan.
In order to register for GATE Exam, candidates are required to fill the GATE Online Form through the official website of GATE Online Application Processing System (GOPAS), upload the required documents, and pay GATE Exam Fees. There will be total 65 Questions of Maximum 100 Marks. Out of those 65 questions, 10 questions will be of General Aptitude and rest 55 questions will be of Engineering Mathematics and other Core Subject.
There are three types of Questions: 1) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
In GATE Exam, there will be 1/3rd of negative marking for 1 Marker MCQs and 2/3rd of negative marking for 2 Marks MCQs. There will be no negative marking for MSQs and NAT question types.
