After successfully cracking GATE, which is one of the many competitive exams for engineers, prolific opportunities open up for the students.
Below are the opportunities lying ahead for the students after qualifying GATE.
1. Jobs in Public Sector Units(PSU)
High scores in GATE can directly get you an interview call for job at one of the PSU’s. The GATE has gained its popularity after the PSU’s have signed a MOU with the IIT’s for direct recruitment. Who is unaware of the benefits of a Government job? Job Security, high pay package, pensions to name a few.
The recruitment procedure for PSU is a valid GATE score of the current year and then a round of Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). The weightage given to GATE score is between 75% to 85%. Different PSUs that recruit through GATE include:-

- Oil and Natural Gas Corporation
- Indian Oil Corporation Limited
- Bharat Electronics Limited
- Indian Space Research Organization

2. Post Graduation from top Indian colleges-(MTech)
If you want to go for further studies in engineering and that too from the IIT’s and NIT’s, your GATE score will be the base for your admission. Your GATE score should clear the cut off requirement for each institution and a final round of interview after that for final admission.
Note-Your GATE score will be valid for 3 years for admission for MTech.
3. Research and Development
For some exceptional students, who are neither interested in secured jobs, nor want to study the standard subjects that the lot is studying. For those try their hand into research and development.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has introduced fellowship programs for those who have cracked GATE and pursue their career in research and development sector.
There are certain research centers like Bhabha Atomic Research center and ISRO that look for the research positions based on your GATE score and also conduct their own examinations hiring.
4. PhD entrance
You can pursue PhD in your subject of interest based after clearing GATE and the respective interview by the respective panel. Getting a PhD is a highly respective position which is also an eligibility criteria for assistant professor jobs at IIT’s and IIIT’s.
5. Post Graduate diploma in Management
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) offers various courses in PGDM such as:
- Post Graduate Diploma in industrial Engineering (PGDIE)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing management (PGDMM)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management (PGDPM)
