GATE Exam Pattern 2022
GATE 2022 Exam Pattern comprises the number of questions, number of Subjects (papers), total marks, number of sections, subject wise mark distribution, , question types, and marking system. GATE aspirants before appearing for GATE Exam 2022, are required to get familiar with GATE Exam pattern first because from the GATE Exam pattern they can strategize their GATE Exam preparation. Following table depicts the GATE Exam pattern for Mechanical Engineering (ME), Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Civil Engineering (CE), Electrical Engineering (EE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC), Chemical Engineering (CH), and Instrumentation Engineering (IN).

|Number of sections||GATE 2022 question paper will comprise of total 3 sections except for AR, CY, GG, EY, XL, PH and MA papers :
1) General Aptitude (GA)
2) Engineering Mathematics (for XL papers it is Chemistry)
3) Subject – Specific section
|General Aptitude Section||The GATE paper will also consist of a compulsory General Aptitude (GA) section constituting of 10 questions.
Therefore, the total marks for this section will be 15 marks.
|Marking Scheme||MCQs carrying 1 mark each– 1/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
MCQs carrying 2 marks – 2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
* There is no negative marking for Multiple Select Question (MSQ) &
Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions.
Is it compulsory to attempt all the questions of the GATE Exam 2022?
Yes, all the questions are compulsory to attempt in GATE Exam 2022.
Will there be a specific sectional time duration in GATE Exam 2022?
No, there will be no specific sectional time duration. Students can attempt the questions from any section of their choice.
Will a white paper be provided in the GATE Exam to calculate the NAT questions?
Yes, every student will be given a white paper or a supplement for solving NAT type questions.
What is the negative marking scheme of the GATE 2022 Exam?
The negative marking scheme of the GATE 2022 Exam is as follows:
- There will be a deduction of 1/3rd marks for every incorrect answer of MCQs carrying 1 mark.
- There will be a deduction of 2/3rd marks for every incorrect answer of MCQs carrying 2 marks.
- For MSQs (Multiple Select Questions) and NAT (Numerical Answer types), there is no such negative marking scheme.
What is the weightage of each section of the GATE 2022 Exam?
There will be three sections of GATE 2022 Exam, out of which the 1st section Engineering Mathematics carries 13%, 2nd section General Aptitude carries 15% and 3rd Subject Specific section (Core subjects) carries 72% weightage of Total Marks.
