Applied mechanics (also engineering mechanics) is a branch of the physical sciences and the practical application of mechanics. Pure mechanics describes the response of bodies (solids and fluids) or systems of bodies to external forces. The subject deals with the study of forces and couples and their effects on rigid bodies. Engineering Mechanics is further divided into two branches; Statics which deals with the study of state of rest under action of forces and Dynamics which deals with the state of motion under action of forces. Engineering Mechanics finds applications in design and analysis of machine components, mechanisms and structures
